GAZE Helen "Nel" Lillian

Helen Lillian Gaze, born Helen (Nell) Lillian Stodart on January 6, 1896, at Stirling Street, Perth, was the daughter of a family that would later see her become a prominent figure in her community. She married Fredric Owen Gaze, a grazier born on April 3, 1892, in New Thebarton, District of Hindmarsh, South Australia. The couple wed on April 14, 1920, at the Catholic Church in Cottesloe.
The Gaze family established their residence in Gnowangerup, where they lived from 1920 until 1953. During this time, they managed the "Yarrawee" property, a significant farming business in the district. Helen and Fredric had two children: Barbara Helen Owen Stewart (nee Gaze) and William Frederick Owen Gaze. Barbara attended Kebaringup School before transferring to Loreto Convent in Claremont as a boarder, while Bill attended Aquinas College at Manning.

In 1953, the family left Gnowangerup when their son Bill married and took over the management of the "Yarrawee" property. After leaving Gnowangerup, Helen and Fredric resided at 14 View Street, Peppermint Grove.
Helen was known for her active involvement in various organizations and social clubs. She was a foundation member of the Lake Karrinyup Country Club, the Gnowangerup Golf Club, and the Albany Golf Club, where she held official positions. Additionally, she served on the Executive Committee of The Karrakatta Club in Perth from 1958 to 1960. The family home at Yarrawee featured a tennis court and a mini golf course, which hosted many tennis parties.
Helen was regarded as an excellent cook and enjoyed playing bridge. She was also known for her interests in attending races and traveling abroad. She was actively involved in the lives of her six grandchildren.

Helen passed away on November 2nd , 1972, at Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital in Perth, Western Australia, and was laid to rest in Gnowangerup Cemetery. Throughout her life, she faced challenges, particularly after the passing of her husband, as she continued to manage the property for her son Bill until he was old enough to take over.

Helen's life was marked by her contributions to her family, her involvement in the community, and her dedication to maintaining the Gaze family legacy.
